10 business ideas for students to start

Saving money is easy when you have money to save, but most students believe they don't have enough money to put away. This savings month, Rosebank College gives students business ideas that can bring them an income allowing them to earn while they learn.

  1. Sell your textbooks
Selling textbooks you no longer need is not only good for the environment but it's also a quick easy way to make some money. If you really want to make this a profitable business, you can collect old textbooks from classmates and you could become a second-hand textbook dealer. Textbooks are always in demand, and you already know the clientele you need to buy your product.
  2. Sell home grown vegetables
Growing your own vegetables is very rewarding. All you need to get started is some decent sand and some seedlings. But to be a very successful vegetable gardener, you will need to understand what it takes to keep your plants healthy. Sell your vegetables to neighbours to make extra cash. Vegetables such as spinach, tomatoes, and onions are basic ingredients needed for most dishes and should sell very quickly.
  3. Sell stock images
Do you enjoy taking pictures in your spare time? This hobby could very well be your next income generator. Sell your images to iStockPhoto or Shutterstock. Be prepared to start small, build your profile and your photos could be in demand.
  4. Sell your artwork
Are you a talented artist? Do you paint or draw for fun? Yes! Then turn your hobby into a business. Create artwork that you can sell online or directly to potential customers. Most people appreciate art and are willing to pay for it.

  5. Become a YouTube video blogger
If you can do some basic editing or even if you can't, you could always find someone to help you. YouTube video blogging is a great way to earn extra cash. You get paid based on the advertisements displayed on your videos, so the more people that watch your videos the more you get paid.
  6. Design and sell t-shirts
Start an online t-shirt store. The great thing about t-shirts is that you can put funny sayings or interesting designs on your t-shirts and those should get customers interested to make a purchase.
  7.  Become a translator
Do you speak more than one language fluently? Consider becoming a translator.  There are many industries that are looking for translators such as courtrooms, embassies or corporate companies. Do your research and offer your language skills to earn a little extra.
  8. Become a babysitter
Do you love babies and can you be trusted with a living breathing human baby? If yes then babysit to earn extra cash. Ask your family and friends with kids when they are looking for a night out.
  9. Become a pet sitter
When most people go on holiday they need someone to take care of their pets. If you love pets and aren't allergic then offer this service to those who need it and you will be smiling all the way to the bank.
  10. Open a car wash
The most important thing to consider when starting a car wash is the location. You need a space where customers can clearly identify your car wash. You can charge up to R60 a car if you provide a thorough wash.
