Education
The IIE Higher Certificate in Early Childhood Care and Education will prepare you to start a career in teaching and facilitation in Early Childhood Education (birth to 4 years).

The IIE Higher Certificate in Early Childhood Care and Education will prepare you to start a career in teaching and facilitation in Early Childhood Education (birth to 4 years). If Early Childhood Development (ECD) interests you, then this education course is for you.
Students of this qualification will gain the knowledge, skills, and applied competencies identified by education experts as critical for employees to enter the world of work as early childhood education caretakers.

International | A SAQA Evaluation Certificate with NSC Level 4 equivalence with at least 40 % or equivalent for English. |
Student's proficiency in The IIE's Language of Learning and Teaching (LoLT), English, plus partial proficiency (sufficient for basic conversation, i.e. conversational competence) in one other South African official language (excluding Afrikaans) are required components of fundamental learning for this programme. For this, the following will be endorsed on your certificate:
LoLT:
• This higher certificate is delivered in English and thus English is known as the Language of Learning and Teaching (LoLT).
• On successful completion of this Higher Certificate in Early Childhood Care and Education (HC in ECCE), your certificate will be endorsed with LoLT (English).
LoCC:
• If you have an African Language (excluding Afrikaans) as part of your NSC or equivalent, you may receive academic credit for this language.
• If you are claiming conversational competence in an African Language (excluding Afrikaans), you are required to pass a competency test on NQF Level 5 in order to demonstrate conversational competence in such a language and receive academic credit for this language.
• Competency tests are offered in four (4) official languages only, namely, isiXhosa, isiZulu, Sepedi and Setswana on The IIE campuses.
• If conversational competence is claimed in another African language (excluding Afrikaans) other than the four listed above, the onus is on you to provide evidence of NQF Level 5, or higher conversational competence in that language.
• Once you have demonstrated conversational competence in an African language, and on successful completion of the HC in ECCE, your certificate will be endorsed, for example LoCC: isiZulu.
Note: Languages offered are campus dependent.
Mature Age Exemption
Candidates must have attempted the Senior Certificate or equivalent, attained the age of 23 before or during the first year of registration with three years’ work experience and proven ability relating to the proposed programme as well as adequate communication skills; OR Candidates must have attained the age of 45 before or during the first year of registration.
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)
Where candidates do not satisfy the formal admission requirements for this qualification, The IIE may consider an admission application in terms of the Credit Accumulation and Transfer, Recognition of Prior Learning and Qualification Completion Policy (IIE010).
General Education Development (GED) - An USA qualification developed by the American Council on Education (ACE).
Candidates with a GED qualification may be admitted if they have a SAQA Evaluation Certificate with NSC L4 equivalence, a minimum score of 165 out of 200 for Reasoning through Language Arts and a minimum of 145 out of 200 for each of the other GED subjects (Mathematical Reasoning, Social Studies and Science).
OQSF Qualifications
Candidates with an OQSF Level 4 120-credit cognate qualification may admitted once access and approved by the relevant Head of Faculty.
IEB International Secondary Certificate
Candidates must have achieved Higher Certificate pass and meet the additional admission criteria (where applicable).
The OoR will apply to USAf for Exemption based on Senate Discretion.
On Campus
This is a one-year full-time qualification offered by The Independent Institute of Education (The IIE) at IIE Rosebank College. Face-to-face lectures take place during the day on weekdays at the following campuses: Braamfontein, Cape Town, Durban and Pretoria CBD.
Online
This IIE qualification is available through IIE Distance Learning for individuals wanting to study and work. You can receive Online support from IIE Rosebank College. Speak to one of our student advisors for more information.
We've got your back!
All our IIE Rosebank College registered students get free software. The software includes and is not limited to MS Excel, MS Project, MS Word, MS PowerPoint and MS Outlook, which come with Office 365 bundle. Students can access the software online using their RCCONNECT email addresses on office 365 or visit the campus IT Department to get FTP access to download the software.

The IIE Higher Certificate in Early Childhood Care and Education is accredited by the Council on Higher Education (CHE) and is registered by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) as a 133-credit qualification on Level 5 (SAQA ID No: 104532). On successful completion, you will receive a Higher Certificate in Early Childhood Care and Training from The Independent Institute of Education (The IIE), a leading registered private provider of higher education in South Africa.
International students will be considered for this qualification ONLY if they completed Grade 12 in South Africa. These students will automatically be referred to the Faculty of Education on campus for consideration.
The Independent Institute of Education (THE IIE) offers you the opportunity to start with a higher certificate and progress into a diploma or degree.
